This weekend I had the privilege of attending the RHS Green Careers Open Day at the stunning RHS Bridgewater in Worsley, Salford. This free event was designed to inspire and inform individuals aged 14 and over about the diverse opportunities in horticulture, conservation, and environmental sectors. The day was packed with informative sessions, hands-on activities, and opportunities to connect with industry professionals. Here’s a look at the day and a few pictures of beautiful RHS Bridgewater:

Careers Talks and Discussions
From 11-3pm, a series of talks were held featuring inspirational speakers from the RHS and guest organisations. These sessions provided valuable insights into various career paths within the green sector, offering advice on qualifications, career changes, and personal experiences.

Behind-the-Scenes Tours
Attendees had the chance to participate in guided tours of different areas within RHS Garden Bridgewater. These tours showcased the inner workings of the garden, from plant cultivation to sustainable practices, giving a real-world glimpse into horticultural careers. A highlight of my day was the guided tour of the RHS Bridgewater kitchen gardens, it was such a great privilege to hear all about the planting decisions and future plans for the space. There’s nothing I love more than spending time in a walled garden. The walled garden at RHS Bridgewater with its productive beds and contemporary water features is a particularly fabulous example of functionality meeting world class garden design.

The RHS ‘Hub’
The large marquee, aka the RHS ‘Hub’ served as a central point for attendees to meet with RHS staff and learn about various career opportunities, including apprenticeships, volunteering, and work-based training programs. It was a great place to ask questions and get personalised advice. I enjoyed speaking to several people there representing organisations such as the Myerscough College, National Trust and RHS about their career journeys.
