🌿 Happy National Gardening Week! 🌱
Just planting a little memory seed today... From my first few houseplants, to a blooming balcony jungle, to branching out and making planters from pallets and greening the street outside our old flat, and now putting down roots in our suburban garden — this green-thumbed obsession has been growing strong for five years. I can honestly say that planting seeds and watching them grow, watering and tending to our many plants has helped with my mental health through some turbulent times, like the pandemic, grief, redundancies, ill health- it’s a real therapy!

I love to dig into plant books, germinate ideas at flower shows, and write about gardening on the Good Fronds blog. I could spend hours just sitting and watching my plants thrive, the bees they attract, and now our wildlife pond alive with visiting garden birds.

This year, the focus of National Gardening Week is on budding gardeners 🌸 Whether you’re starting with one leafy friend on your windowsill or dreaming of your own garden oasis, there’s no better thyme to begin. Hopefully my journey will inspire you to get growing too! 🌼

🎾Influenced in part by @charlottejacklin we booked a court, grabbed our rackets and actually played tennis!
🚣 @terrylemac and I took a trip to Cambridge, which was such a pleasure.
🫶🏻 The Mayfair crew reunited after far too long, so good to see @chrissiebeck smiling face.
🪺We hosted our annual Easter buffet and egg hunt, which was the best yet!
🐰Just in time for Easter we welcomed our very own real life bunnies, Bertie & Percy into our home.
💙Sadly, my auntie passed away which meant a trip to London to see her off in style. It was a beautiful send off but a sad time for our family.
🌷The tulips that I planted back in October are making an appearance, that has brought great joy.

Here’s to a peaceful month ahead.

Sometimes I dream about Victorian glass houses and walled gardens, those warm, light-filled sanctuaries tucked away from the world, where time slows and the only company is a symphony of plants. 🌿

🍍Tatton Park brings those daydreams to life. Located in Cheshire, it’s one of the UK’s most complete historic estates, spanning over 1,000 acres. The grand glasshouses date back to the 1800s, originally built to grow exotic fruits like pineapples and grapes for the Egerton family.

As with a lot of the grand legacy of the Victorian era, we must acknowledge and remember the odious truth of how these grand estates were originally funded. The Egerton family had a complex history and involvement in the slave trade. The @nationaltrust created an ‘Interim Report on the Connections between Colonialism and Slavery’ which is a small step in the right direction, acknowledging the horrors of the past, stating which of its properties were built off the backs of those who suffered most. This recognition and transparency is vital for our society to heal and grow.

Tatton Parks walled garden is a peaceful haven, filled with fragrant wisteria, thriving vegetables, and rare tropical plants, it’s a true celebration of heritage gardening and sustainable practices. ✨

Cambridge at Easter is always worth a punt.

We basked in the joys of spring on a little jaunt to Cambridge with @terrylemac and our precious niece and nephew.
We visited our dear uncle David’s house and enjoyed the garden, the blossom was in full bloom and the sun was shining, the wisteria was making an appearance, and the magnolia smelt phenomenal. We picked up fresh croissants from the bakery, got the bouncy castle out, watched rom coms, ate delicious food and laughed into the early hours. Good times.

🌸What in carnation is going on here? Swipe to see the moment that I found myself surrounded by the most spectacular display of botanical flower paintings from the 17th to 18th century, including works by notable artists George Flegl and Rachel Ruysch.

🪻In 1679, at the age of fifteen, Rachel Ruysch began her artistic journey as an apprentice to Willem van Aelst, a renowned flower painter in Amsterdam. Under his guidance, she quickly developed her skills, and by eighteen, she was already producing and selling her own signed works independently.

🌷In 1693, she married the Amsterdam portrait painter Juriaen Pool. Together, they had ten children (😳), yet Ruysch continued to paint throughout her marriage and adult life. At a time when women were typically expected to engage in domestic arts such as sewing and spinning, she pursued her passion for painting and maintained a successful career. Her income likely supported the family in hiring help, allowing her to balance both motherhood and a thriving artistic practice. Ruysch’s dedication and talent earned her an international circle of patrons and a lasting legacy in the art world.

🌼It’s pretty unusual to see a female name next to one of the great works from hundreds of years ago in any fine art exhibition. I often wonder about all that talent that was never given the opportunity to flourish in a patriarchal society.

🌻Here’s to all the great women out there who showed us what is possible, against all the odds.
